Taraji P. Henson for PETA

I've always been a fan of Taraji P Henson (thinking back to the classic movie Baby Boy).  I've watched her grow into one of Hollywood's best actresses. But when I watched the Behind the Scenes video for her recent PETA shoot I was floored.

I've never seen the PETA documentary that she refers to but her words were so genuine and so real that it made me an even bigger fan. Although I've never wanted a real fur, the clips from this video definitely make me an official supporter of PETA.

I am a #WWDMAGIC Correspondent. {well not yet!}

You know how much I love a good competition. During a late night tweeting session I got an extra special retweet from @WWDMagic. Which prompted me to follow them on twitter and then do a little blog surfing to see why my tweet was so special.

In case you are totally lost, WWDMagic is like the mecca of tradeshows for fashion. I found out that they're teaming up with select bloggers and Teen Vogue to create a lounge during the tradeshow. Bloggers are competing to become an official WWDMagic Correspondent. (that's me!!!) We were all asked to answer a few questions.

The Million Dollar Questions:

  1. How did you start your blog? What was the creative inspiration behind putting yourself out to the world? As the self proclaimed "fashion's tweetheart", I found myself retweeting fashion posts (or images) and then engaging in conversations with my followers. One day 140 characters just wasn't enough and HeyBellaBlog.com was born. I am inspired by everything. Imagery, people, love, life, food, music, fancy stuff, celebrities ... the smallest things get my skirt swinging. BUT, I am in the process now of really trying to find a focus and stick with it - well maybe?
  2. From where you began to where you are now as an independent writer, what are three valuable things you've learned about your craft? 1. Always stay true to yourself. Write when you feel like it and about what you feel like writing about. If it doesn't make your skirt swing (either for the good or the bad) don't write about. 2. Originality is key. No one will hear you if you don't have your own voice. 3. Love it because you are a writer with something to say. Not for the potentials of the business.
  3. What is your personal style? I am a die hard indecisive Scorpio. So my style changes depending on my mood, if my hair is "done", and whether or not I have money in my purse. You might see me in a fancy dress from Tadashi or urban chic in Forever 21. You'll never put me in a box!
  4. What brands are you head over heels in love with? I have daily fashgasms gawking at Jeffrey Campbell heels. If I were a dude (or brought my boyfriend fancy suits) I would so be in love with Perry Ellis and go broke dressing like those runway models. I've followed Christian Dior for years and if I were ever an actress I would wear one of those couture pieces to the Oscars.
  5. What are three of your favorite websites? I have a routine when I get in. Twitter, TheYBF, and then I just search Google for "fashion news".
  6. Who are three people you love to follow on twitter? @oscarprgirl (an awesome source for what PR girls really think), @jimshi809 (he knows what EVERYONE is wearing), and @fashmarketing (they're like my blog/website mentors - in my mind!)
  7. What do you hope to gain from attending WWDMAGIC? In my never ending quest to upgrade my networking skills I think WWDMagic is the perfect place to cultivate more relationships. Ones that otherwise I probably would not be able to form. From meeting retailers, to professional bloggers, to manufacturers - what blogger doesn't want to go to WWDMagic?

WATCH: Chanel Runway Show {Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture S/S 2011}

Dear Karl,

I am so confused by this! For the life of me I am trying to figure out how this is couture. And why in the world are the models in flats? I admit I love a good flat shoe to wear to work, NOT ON THE RUNWAY! The models look HOMEY, and mad yet excited to be getting paid work. Total BOREGASM! - thanks, Me!

Welp, I searched and I tried to find one pic I liked and ... nope! But here's the video of the show. Maybe I should have watched this before the Dior show?

WATCH: Christian Dior Runway Show {Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture S/S 2011}

John Galliano creates another stunning Christian Dior couture collection for Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week. An era when dress making was an art and not just a wrap dress, he incorporates the glamour and volume of the 50's with this bright collection. Oh my and it's giving me the biggest fashgasm EVER!

Get a VIPeek of the backstage as John Galliano speaks on his inspiration for this Haute Couture show for Christian Dior, gawk at the fab images, and watch the amazing video of the show.

As a browsed through over 170 images I picked my favs to share with you! (Images: Getty Images?Europe)

Androgynous model Andrej Pejic {Jean Paul Gaultier Spring/Summer 2011 ad campaign}

I am not sure what I love more - the matching pleated trench coats or the fact that male model Andrej Pejic (pictured on the right) looks just as amazing dressed as a woman. Supermodel Karolina Kurkova looks uber fab as well.

It's hard to judge who's more gorgeous, right?!

I tried to find a few pics of Andrej as a man but he really is androgynous. Here's the best "manly" photos I could find.

H&M Expands {Literally} with a Plus Size Collection

My complaint - the lack of "trendy" plus size retailers. My solution - Trendy retailers just need to make plus size garments.

So just as I was complaining about this topic to one of my bloggeristas Kee from iStyleLikeMe in walks H&M.

H&M releases this statement:

This spring H&M presents Inclusive – a one-off collection of colourful and feminine fashion with lots of attitude in a wider than usual range of sizes.

The twenty pieces will be available in sizes 32-54 and will be sold exclusively through H&M Online from early March. The collection includes figure-flattering party dresses in 50’s styles with large polka dots and rose patterns, as well as skirts, tops, cardigans and lingerie following the same theme.

The capsule collection pictured above features two gorge curvy divas, Lauren McKenzie and Robyn Lawley. In case you're wondering what Euro sizes 32-54 converts to ... it's US sizes 6-24. I'm an 18 - Yippee!

However remember we said exclusively online. H&M does not ship to the US yet.

Thank you H&M for inflating and deflating my big happy blog post all in one short breath. *sighs*

As I read the press release I did notice that no where did it mention the words plus size, missy, full figuredfattie, or anything of sorts. Why not just say "Inclusive – a plus size collection exclusively for H&M Online". Perhaps it's because of their original plus size collection BiB Collection (Big is Beautiful) sizes 18-28 is also online.

I can only speculate that this line isn't doing so well (I will have to do more research). From the looks of the online pictures it's like a Forever21 knockoff and that just seems wrong.

So where are my UK readers I need a sample!

[Update: While reading up about the collection I found this: "The online only thing is supposed to be a nod to the way plus size women shop. When Australian designer Leona Edmiston expanded her offering to a size 24 in 2008, her research indicated that many plus sized women buy online because they’re not comfortable shopping in stores." SMDH I love shopping & trying on clothes - when they fit! Their research is crap!]

WATCH: Bria Murphy for Dark & Lovely

The beauty world has a never ending product list for consumers to choose from. Naturally, brands look to celebrities to boost their sales.

Bria Murphy (the daughter of comedian Eddie Murphy) is the newest face for African American beauty brand Dark and Lovely.

"I have been relaxing my hair with Dark & Lovely since I was 11," Bria told WWD.

Dark and Lovely made the announcement during a posh New York affair with tons of gorgeous trend-setters.

I personally use Optimum products which is also a brand of SoftSheen-Carson. But as healthy as Bria's hair looks I may be up for a change.

Leave a comment (they make me smile) if you've used Dark & Lovely or if you plan to try it.

Friend Friday {The Authenticity of Blogging }

au·then·tic /ôˈTHentik/
1. Of undisputed origin; genuine: "authentic 14th-century furniture".
2. Made or done in the traditional or original way: "authentic
Italian meals"

This week's Friend Friday topic is about authenticity. And my definition of it as it relates to blogging.

1. Most readers and fellow fashion bloggers value authenticity in the
blogs they read. How would you describe blog/blogger authenticity? Blog authenticity to me is when your blog screams "YOU!". Let me explain. In the world of fashion and beauty it's hard to really be the 1st person to report news, or the first person to blog about a trend. We all get information from other sources or we are inspired by something. Which normal means another blogger has done it, thought it, or wrote about it. So an authentic blog to me is a blog that shows personality, creativity, and it's inviting. I compare it to someone sitting on my couch and chatting with me for a few. Are my readers comfortable ... or do they feel like my neighbor sounds just like me?

2. When it comes to your blog how to you infuse it with that true/
authentic feeling? I always give my thoughts or slightly humorous commentary to my blog posts. It brings the reader closer to me as a writer and allows them to trust what I am posting. Otherwise they could very well search the internet for any news on fashion or beauty. This is a blog - not a magazine. People want my opinion on stuff, or at least I would like to think that they do, LOL.

3. Have you stopped following a blog in the last three months? What
made you lose interest? I have. Mostly blogs that simply repost (without giving their opinions) fashion news or trends from the same blogs that I follow. Or bloggers who I found on twitter and I like their "twitter personality" but NOT their blogs.

4. We can't communicate effectively on our blogs, something we don't
live in real life... what are some ways you try to live an authentic
life? Ha! I am an expert at being me. And that's as authentic as it gets!

5. Give a shout-out... Which bloggers do you think are truly genuine
and why? I look to Taliah and Therese (my 3TMafia crew, LOL) for support. They are two ladies from the same area, both with a full load of "stuff" going on. They're my blog besties (I am still taking applications, LOL). Kudos to my bff Bethany for FINALLY starting a blog after I BEGGED her for all of 2010. She's off to a great start, be sure and go say hi - we live for comments!

Of course let me not forget my Blog Mentors (mostly in my mind). These are bloggers who I look to for inspiration, or I really like where they are going so I keep up with their blogs - Clumps of Mascara, Love Brown Sugar, Cupcakes and Cashmere, Curves and Chaos, and Kitty Bradshaw. (also take a look at my Muse Monday - highlighting my fav blogs!)

Meet The Fashion Designers Of The New Reality Show ALL ON THE LINE

I'm sure this will come as great news to all of my The City fans and you guys who yearn for a peek inside the fashion world.

The new reality show All On The Line will air on Tuesdays on the Sundance Channel. It debuts on March 29th (set your DVR's). The show follows Elle's creative director, Joe Zee, as he coaches semi-established yet struggling fashion designers.

My first thought was, "Dear Baby Jesus, we don't need yet another semi scripted fashion reality show that clearly plays favorites to the judges pets". I watched the sneak peek on facebook a few weeks ago and I will say I am officially excited. It's no Project Runway - in a good way.

“Sundance viewers are very savvy. This show is no nonsense. This show is not a game. It isn’t about the elimination of contestants. You get to see an inside view of how the design process works and how concept goes to reality.", Joe Zee.

This new series might just set the bars for the next all while showing designers how to make it. Meet the designers of All On The Line. One is a Baltimorean!!

Layla & Josh

"Layla L’obatti became hooked on lingerie while studying at FIT. After working for several fashion companies including intimates for Tommy Hilfiger and Nicole Miller, she decided to make her dreams a reality by creating her own line, Between the Sheets. The line has been featured in Fitness Magazine, Marie Claire, Women's Wear Daily and is sold is several boutiques; however, she and her fiancé Josh have maxed out their credit cards and they still haven't been able to truly break into the intimate apparel world.  Layla and Josh have had to put their personal lives on hold until they can make the line a success. Right now everything is at a breaking point and they need Joe to help them find the right path."

Julia Alarcon

"Julia Alarcon knows about second chances, she decided to go back to school and pursue a career in fashion and the age of 39. After graduating Parson's with her sister, the pair launched a line that quickly got recognition from press and sold their line to major boutiques. They were chosen as Women's Wear Daily's "designers to watch" in 2008 and the GenArt "fresh Faces in Fashion" in 2009 and 2010.  Now that her sister has left the business, Julia is in severe financial trouble. She fears it's too late for her and if Joe Zee can’t give her line a second chance, it may be."

Jedda-Kahn

"Jedda-Kahn launched his first line in Spring 2005, but now his biggest accounts have dropped him and he is barely holding on by a thread to his fashion dreams. Despite his celebrity followers and couture clientele, Jedda-Kahn is struggling. He can’t borrow any more money and he isn’t making enough to keep going." (Jedda is from Baltimore)

Gemma Kahng

"The former fashion icon was born and raised in Korea. She came to the U.S. at age 14 and graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago with a degree in Fashion Design. She broke into fashion in 1990 and soon had a hit design as part of the 1990's power suit revolution. She was sold at major retailers including Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales, and was making millions. However the stress of her incredible success took its toll on Gemma and as she became overwhelmed with the business, she couldn't keep her designs fresh, hired the wrong people and burned through her millions when she was no longer in demand. Gemma is at a crossroads, either she gets back on track or she is going to quit trying."

Kara Janx

"Originally from Johannesburg South Africa, Kara appeared on the second season of “Project Runway,” where many viewers thought she should have been in the final three. The exposure helped her get her designs into hundreds of boutiques across the country, but there was push back from some major retailers who thought of her as a reality star rather than a credible designer. Now with the economic downturn many of the boutiques that embraced her have gone under or cut back on orders. In addition, Kara is now a wife and mother struggling to balance the life of a fashion designer with being the mother of two small kids."

Leila Shams

"A former director at DKNY Jeans, Express and Bebe, Leila launched a Spring 2010 that has made significant strides for a first-time collection, but the cost of the launch has forced to sell her apartment and go into debt." (Leila is also from Baltimore)

Liquica & Andrei

"This real life married couple fell in love at first sight have been in business together for 8 years. Liquica Anggraini, who is originally from Indonesia, designs and Andrei oversees the business aspects of their line Radenroro, which has been featured in InStyle and Daily Candy. He’s invested over $300,000 in their line and if this season doesn’t sell, they have to close their doors."

Dana Maxx

"After graduating from FIT, Dana Maxx worked for Marc Jacobs and Betsey Johnson before launching her own line in 2007 to rave reviews. Her designs have been featured in WWD and Front Row Magazine and her line has grown rapidly, perhaps too quickly. Dana is struggling to keep the company afloat and is in danger of becoming an overnight success with no staying power."

From the promos pictures I am not too excited about the designers (expect for Leila Shams) but Joe Zee is my mentor (in my mind) and I will watch any he's on!

What do you think of the designers? Will you watch!?
